Secondary intestinal polyps caused by primary disease are not inherited, but certain intestinal polyps do have a genetic predisposition.
Familial adenomatous polyposis runs in families, but it does not mean that children or immediate family members of people with the condition will necessarily develop the disease, but that the probability of developing it is greater than normal.
