Come to the gastroenterology clinic and don’t eat breakfast

A reminder to all patients that when they come to the gastroenterology clinic, they better not eat breakfast! Why? Gastroenterology patients often need to have certain tests and examinations, such as liver function, ultrasound, gastroscopy, abdominal CT and so on. If you eat breakfast, the food will affect the results of the liver function tests and the food will interfere with the abdominal ultrasound, especially the bile duct ultrasound. Eating breakfast will delay the gastroscopy even more. If the patient is fasting, the gastroscopy can be completed the same morning if there are not many patients in the endoscopy room. However, if the patient has eaten breakfast, the gastroscopy will have to be scheduled for another time. Even for upper abdominal CT and lower abdominal CT, the results are better on an empty stomach.       To sum up, if you come to the gastroenterology department: please do not eat breakfast if you need to do liver function tests; please do not eat breakfast if you need to do abdominal ultrasound; please do not eat breakfast if you need to do abdominal CT; please do not eat breakfast if you need to do gastroscopy.
