What is a functional pituitary tumor?

There are so many diseases around us that we don’t know how to face them. Functional pituitary tumor is a kind of tumor, and many people are very afraid of this disease. In order to allay your worries and make you live a healthier life, we would like to introduce functional pituitary tumor to you in detail.

Pituitary tumors are relatively common cranial tumors, accounting for about 5% to 10% of cranial tumors. In the past, the classification of pituitary tumors was mostly determined by staining method, which was divided into pheochromocytoma, pheochromocytoma and suspicious cell tumor according to different staining.

In recent years, due to the establishment and continuous improvement of various examination methods, pituitary tumors can be classified into two major categories based on whether the tumor cells have the ability to secrete hormones: functional pituitary tumors and non-functional pituitary tumors. Functional pituitary tumors are classified into growth hormone tumors, lactogenic tumors, adrenocorticotropic tumors, thyrotropic tumors and gonadotropic tumors depending on the type of hormone secreted. Functional pituitary tumors can also be mixed, such as growth hormone tumors + lactotrophic tumors. Originally, it was thought that suspensory cell tumors, which account for about 80% of pituitary tumors, do not have the ability to secrete hormones. Therefore, the percentage of non-functional pituitary tumors in pituitary tumors has decreased significantly, accounting for about 25%-30% of pituitary tumors.
