Echocardiographic manifestations of mitral stenosis

The echocardiographic manifestations of mitral stenosis are characterized clinically by M-mode ultrasound showing mitral valve thickening, wall-like changes, and anterior and posterior leaflet motion in the same direction, which is the typical presentation. Two-dimensional echocardiography can show the shape of the stenotic valve and the specific activity of the stenosis, and can measure the area of the valve orifice. Typically, during diastole, the anterior leaflet resembles a domed shape, while the posterior leaflet becomes less active and less mobile, with adhesions and fusion at the junction, thickening of the leaflet, and a smaller orifice area.
