Blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg is already in the range of hypertension values. If the patient is not accompanied by other clinical conditions, he/she does not need to take medication and can be controlled by means of lifestyle improvement. Usually, patients with blood pressure higher than 160/100mmHg, hypertension combined with diabetes and those who have already developed heart, brain or kidney damage or complications, or those with persistently elevated blood pressure and no significant effect of lifestyle improvement, need to take medication. If the only manifestation of blood pressure is 140/90mmHg, it can be treated by lifestyle interventions, such as weight reduction, salt restriction, increased exercise, smoking and alcohol cessation, and relaxation as much as possible, all of which have complementary effects. Patients with hypertension are usually advised to control their body mass index to 24 kg/m^2 and to consume no more than 6 g of salt per day, with appropriate folic acid supplementation if necessary. Patients with hypertension are advised to consume more fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet, reduce the use of oil, and eat less or no fatty meat and animal offal.
