How is an asymmetrical jaw deformity examined?

Patient: Hi Prof. Yang Bin, I was born with different sizes of the left and right sides of my face, and I want to achieve a balanced face through surgery. Should I undergo jaw angle grinding surgery in my case? When can I have the surgery? Thank you! Prof. Yang Bin, Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery Center, Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences: Hello, Ms./Mr. First of all, a clear diagnosis is needed, because it is a congenital or developmental deformity, it must be clear exactly which side has the deformity, otherwise, the surgery may lead to a new deformity or aggravate the deformity. If it is a hemifacial hypertrophic deformity, the etiology needs to be clarified is it condylar hypertrophy? Prolongation of the ascending branch? Enlargement of the mandibular body? Abnormal proliferation of bone fibers? It is also necessary to exclude the possibility of jaw tumors or cysts. The surgical or reconstructive treatment varies from one cause to another. In a large number of cases that I have treated, all of the above have occurred. Therefore, it is advisable to choose surgery carefully! In the case of short hemifacial deformity, the surgical approach is to treat the short side with traction lengthening osteogenesis. Therefore, the diagnosis must first be clear: on which side is the deformity? Is it short or hypertrophic? Whether it is hemifacial hypertrophy or hemifacial shortening, there is the question of whether the occlusal relationship is normal. This relates to the type of surgery to be performed. Therefore, the patient must be carefully examined by our specialized physicians before the surgery and the necessary imaging tests (to be done with us, such as CT) must be done to make an accurate diagnosis. It is recommended to come to our hospital where we do meticulous examinations, take X-rays of special locations, and do 3D CT examinations to clarify the nature, extent and scope of the deformity. And we will develop a sound surgical plastic surgery plan according to the actual situation of the patient.
