Cheilitis is a general term for inflammatory diseases that occur on the lips. It is divided into acute and chronic labyrinthitis according to the course of the disease; vesicular, eczematous, and desquamative labyrinthitis according to the clinical features; and chronic nonspecific, glandular, benign lymphoproliferative, granulomatous, actinic, allergic labyrinthitis, and May-Ro syndrome according to the etiologic pathology. Some other diseases of the lip such as lip lichen planus and discoid lupus erythematosus also have similar manifestations and should be differentiated.
