Can patients older than 70 years receive chemotherapy?

A recent study published in the journal Clin Breast Cancer showed that weekly adjuvant epirubicin combined with paclitaxel chemotherapy is feasible for patients older than 70 years with operable breast cancer. This therapy has an acceptable safety profile and encouraging efficacy and should be further studied in older patients. The study prospectively enrolled 59 patients aged >70 years with operable breast cancer who received weekly adjuvant epirubicin combined with paclitaxel chemotherapy after surgery from 2005 to 2009. The study explored patient compliance and tolerability of treatment and reported preliminary results for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The results showed that patients tolerated adjuvant sequential chemotherapy well, with no grade 4 adverse events and no second malignancies. Patient compliance with chemotherapy was good, with 95% of patients receiving 6 pre-planned cycles of chemotherapy. Median DFS and OS were not achieved after a median follow-up of 24 months, and the study reported three cases of relapse and two tumor-related deaths.
