Health education for ITP patients

All patients with ITP should be instructed to avoid strenuous activities, trauma, and the use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs; some drugs may also induce thrombocytopenia and should be used with caution. For pediatric ITP patients, adequate communication with the patient’s family should be made so that they understand that the disease is benign and mostly self-limiting, and that most children often do not require special management except for close observation and regular follow-up. Young women with ITP should be warned that the disease may worsen during pregnancy and that there may be a risk of neonatal hemorrhage; patients with ITP should be educated about the possible side effects of long-term glucocorticosteroid use and given prophylaxis for osteoporosis; post-splenectomy patients are at increased risk for serious bacterial infections and should be advised to seek immediate medical attention after the onset of fever.
