What is the main manifestation of facial muscle spasm

Facial muscle spasm, also known as hemifacial tic, shows paroxysmal, uncontrollable abnormal twitching of the muscles of one side of the face, the duration of each attack varies from tens of seconds to several minutes. In severe cases, the face is asymmetrical, the corners of the mouth droop on the spastic side, and the nasolabial folds become shallow. Frequent twitching of the upper and lower eyelid muscles (orbicularis oculi) can cause the eyes to open and become smaller, which affects reading the newspaper and watching TV; it also affects driving safety. Spasms and twitches in the corner of one side of the mouth, upper and lower lip and cheek muscles will cause facial deformation and distortion to one side, and the spasms will develop to the neck in the late stage of the disease. “This disease seriously affects daily life and social activities, and patients often have a great psychological burden and self-pity, especially when they are engaged in marketing, education and public employees, and students, and when they talk face to face with people, especially with strangers or important customers or superiors, the more nervous they are, the more their faces The more serious the spasms and twitches, so the negative effect of the disease on the psyche, resulting in reluctance to attend social events, afraid to deal with people, even the power to smile is lost, therefore, directly affect school, employment and work efficiency. In medical terms, the eyelids are called eyelids, and there are two muscles in the eyelids: one is called the orbicularis oculi, which surrounds the eye and acts to close the eye when it contracts; the other muscle is called the levator palpebrae, which is located in the upper eyelid and opens the eye when it contracts. With the constant contraction and relaxation of these two muscles, the eyes can open and close. There are two types of eyelid flutter: physiologic and pathologic. In the case of physiological eyelid fluttering, the occurrence is transient and short-lived, usually just a few seconds, and the degree of fluttering is not serious. The doctor said jokingly on the operating table: “I have been jumping eyelids recently, it may also be facial muscle spasm, when I need to find director Zhang to do surgery. In fact, this kind of eyelid jumping, most of the rest is not enough, eye fatigue, mental tension or some external stimulation, this kind of eyelid jumping does not affect the health, more unrelated to the disaster, generally do not need special treatment, feeling more frequent jumping, you can close your eyes to rest for a while, or use your finger belly around the eyes gently massage, you can also take the warm towel compress eye approach, the general eyelid jumping will The eyelid fluttering will usually subside automatically. The early symptom of facial muscle spasm is also eyelid jumping, which is pathological eyelid jumping. Most occur in the lower eyelid, rarely bilateral eyelid jumping, or both eyelids alternately jumping, its episodes more frequent, and long duration, jumping amplitude, eyelid muscle twitching will find the eyes become smaller, no fatigue, tension or irritation factors and other triggers, and after rest or self-regulation, but still continue to attack for more than 3 months. In this case, early manifestation of facial myoclonus should be highly suspected, and this is something that needs to be diagnosed in person by a specialist at the hospital. An experienced specialist will be able to determine whether it is a physiological eyelid twitching; or an early eyelid twitching of facial myoclonus; or some other medical condition. When we see patients in the clinic, we often encounter another situation where the patient complains of tightness, stiffness and numbness on one side of the face, and feels that the eyelids and face are twitching, and after examination it is found that the condition is caused by facial neuritis leading to facial palsy. It is important to emphasize that if one side of the eyelid jumps over a period of time, weeks or months, and develops to the same side of the mouth, upper and lower lip and cheek muscles follow together with the eyelid twitching, this situation can basically be concluded as facial muscle spasm. At this point, it is important to come to the hospital and talk to the doctor to get advice on the next step of treatment.
