Precautions after external auditory canal cholesteatoma surgery

In the case of a simple type of external auditory canal cholesteatoma surgery, where only the cholesteatoma is removed from the external ear canal, there is no need for post-operative packing or compression of the external ear canal. For simple types of external ear canal cholesteatoma surgery, patients should be advised to avoid water in the ear canal for at least 1-2 weeks and not to use an ear picker to dig into the ear to avoid infection of the skin in the ear canal. In case of more complicated external ear canal cholesteatoma surgery, such as invasion of the middle ear or mastoid or even partial removal of the external ear canal bone, the canal should be filled with iodoform gauze, which is usually removed two weeks after surgery. Therefore, we will tell the patient to come to the clinic two weeks after surgery for a review and change of medication and removal of the stuffing in the external ear canal. After the oil gauze or iodine gauze is removed from the external ear canal, the patient will be told to have a regular review and not to use water in the ear canal or touch the external ear canal with unclean things to prevent infection of the external ear canal.
