At the end of September 2014, I had the honor to participate in the “Guyana Light Walk” sent by the Jiangsu Provincial Health Planning Commission to Guyana, South America, to participate in the 3-day “Guyana Light Walk” in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. For more than 20 years, Jiangsu Province has sent 11 medical teams to Guyana, with 174 medical workers, and together with local medical staff, they have treated a large number of Guyanese patients, and established the “Chinese Medical Team Eye Center” in Georgetown Public Hospital in 2009. In the next three days, we and the 11th medical team members successfully completed one hundred cataract ultrasound emulsification and small incision cataract extracapsular extraction surgeries at the center, all patients were implanted with folding IOLs, and all patients recovered well and were successfully blinded in the subsequent review. We also found two cases of complex retinal detachment during the screening process of cataract patients, one of them was a retinal detachment after cataract surgery in one eye, which is a difficult and high-risk surgery with limited success rate even in China; the other one was a total retinal detachment with multiple fissures. The other case was a total retinal detachment with multiple fissures. Without this treatment opportunity, these two patients would only have to suffer from blindness, so we made use of the limited local conditions, repeatedly checked before surgery, discussed many times, made a thorough surgical plan, and after all cataract surgeries were finished, overcame physical and mental exhaustion and worked until 8 o’clock at night to successfully complete these two retinal detachment surgeries. The day after the surgery, both patients’ retinas were successfully reset. The Chinese doctors’ exquisite surgical skills, solid theoretical foundation and serious and responsible working attitude towards the patients were highly praised by the local medical staff. On the morning of September 27, 2014, Director Li Bin of the National Health Planning Commission, who is visiting Guyana, together with Guyana Health Minister Ramsaran and Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin, visited the Guyanese patients who were re-consulted after cataract surgery in the “Brightness Walk”. Director Li Bin inquired about their conditions and personally removed the gauze on their eyes and congratulated them on their recovery. The patients expressed that their vision had improved greatly and was very clear, and shook hands with Director Li Bin enthusiastically, and the outpatient hall resounded with happy cheers to express their heartfelt gratitude.
