Be alert: babies lying flat to drink milk can easily lead to otitis media!

Generally speaking, the breastfeeding posture we advocate is to hold the baby in your hand and let the baby lean back slightly, facing the mother sideways to drink the milk. However, after a long time in this position, the mother’s arms and lower back will easily feel sore and soft. Many mothers believe that letting their babies drink while lying down is a less stressful and less laborious way to feed them. When the baby cries for milk, carry him to the bed and put him next to the breast with the two lying opposite each other. This feeding position puts both the baby and the mother in a more relaxed, casual environment, and the baby can easily fall asleep. If the baby falls asleep, the mother can immediately put a pillow on the baby to cover the quilt, instead of having to transfer the baby from the arm to the bed, which is really a good way to be lazy and save your heart! Baby lying down to drink milk is prone to otitis media Lying down to drink milk hurts a lot! 1, the baby’s teeth are hurt. Don’t think that lying down to drink milk is very carefree, very good, in fact, this convenient and carefree is to pay the price, that price is the baby teeth health. When the baby is lying down to drink milk, almost all the incisors have to be immersed in the milk. If the baby falls asleep while drinking, then the milk left in the mouth will corrupt and produce acid, which in turn corrodes the baby’s teeth, making it easy to form cavities, and in serious cases, complications such as pulpitis and periodontal abscesses may occur, which may also endanger the development of permanent teeth and general health! 2. Triggering ear canal infectious diseases. Dr. Yongkang Au, Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Otolaryngology at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat Sen University, reminds us that lying down to drink milk can easily lead to middle ear infections in babies, and in serious cases, it can even lead to deafness. From the anatomical structure of the ear, the ear is divided into three parts: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear, of which the middle ear is a relatively sealed air cavity with a small tube in the front wall leading to the nasopharynx called the eustachian tube. “In adults, the eustachian tube is long and narrow, while in infants, because the ear is not yet well developed, the eustachian tube is shorter and wider and is positioned horizontally, and its physiological isthmus has not yet been formed, so the tube lumen is relatively wide.” Ou Yongkang said that infants have weaker muscular contraction of the eustachian tube and lower opening in the nasopharynx, so the liquid from the nasopharynx easily flows into the middle ear. If the child is allowed to drink milk lying flat, the inhalation opening of the bottle is too large, the flow of milk is large and the jet is urgent, it may enter the middle ear along the eustachian tube, thus inducing middle ear infection in the baby. Small-month-old babies are prone to overflowing milk, and lying down in a flat position also makes it easy for milk to flow into the middle ear and cause otitis media. Since babies are unable to express themselves accurately, it is very easy to delay medical treatment. Therefore, mothers should closely observe some signs and be alert to the possibility of milk entering the ear when their babies show signs such as scratching their ears, shaking their heads and crying profusely after drinking milk, after excluding other factors that may trigger their discomfort such as wet urine, defecation and uncomfortable clothes. If your baby has pus in the ear, you should send him/her to the hospital for medical treatment as soon as possible. Since the habit of lying down to drink milk has so many disadvantages, how can we correctly let the baby drink milk, not only to save the mother’s mind and convenience but also to let the baby grow up healthily? The correct posture of the baby’s milk – the best way to breastfeed your baby is in a seated position 1. You can also prepare a small stool beforehand. Stepping on a small stool can raise your thighs and bring your baby’s head closer to your mother’s breast. 2. Put the baby on your lap, let the baby’s head rest on the inside of the mother’s arm, and hold the back with your wrist. Hold up the breast with your hand and after squeezing a few drops of the milk, use the nipple to stimulate the skin around the baby’s mouth and when the baby opens his mouth, send the nipple and part of the areola into the baby’s mouth. Then use your fingers to press the breast, so that it is easy to suck, and will not press the baby’s nose. 3. Don’t put the baby back to bed directly after feeding, but put the baby’s body upright with the head resting on the mother’s shoulder and pat and stroke the back to expel the swallowed air. Reminder: A: The baby should not be fed for too long, preferably about 20 minutes, not more than 30 minutes. This is because the habit of letting your baby sleep with the nipple in his mouth is not desirable and is harmful to the healthy development of your baby’s mouth. B: If you sit down to lactate, be sure to position yourself comfortably, and if necessary, support your arms and back with a soft cushion or pillow. C: After the baby can sit, the body movements become more and more flexible, you can let the baby sit and drink milk with a learning cup, to train the baby’s small and large muscle development, increase the baby’s interest in drinking milk, and to prepare for the future from the bottle.
