TCM regulation of hypertension

The initiating factor that causes elevated blood pressure in the body is an imbalance in blood flow supply and demand, of which the heart, brain and kidneys are the most important, and they play a particularly important role in the occurrence and maintenance of elevated blood pressure. The elevated blood pressure itself is a compensatory response of the body to overcome the imbalance of blood supply and demand in the body, therefore, the elevated blood pressure is not purely a negative pathological damage and should not be treated as an object of suppression. The diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in Chinese medicine focuses on “treating the disease at its root” by eliminating the underlying causes of elevated blood pressure. By adjusting the function of the internal organs of the body, that is to say, “to guard the disease mechanism, each division of its own genus, dredge its blood and qi, so that its regulation, and to peace”, to help the body to improve the relationship between blood supply and demand, to take advantage of the situation, to support the body’s own self-stabilizing ability to regulate, so that blood pressure down to normal. In addition to the reduction of blood pressure, the therapeutic effect is also determined by the improvement of clinical symptoms – that is, the improvement of blood supply and demand in the vital organs of the heart, brain and kidney, which is more important than the reduction of blood pressure alone.
