ASIA injury classification

The ASIA Classification of Injury (ASIA) is a standard for neurological assessment of spinal cord injury developed by the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) in 1982. The original criteria included the following definitions and classifications: plane of neurological impairment, zone of impairment, definition of sensory planes based on cortical maps, definition of motor planes based on muscle segments and using key muscle descriptions, and motor scores. in 2000, the definition of motor incomplete impairment was further clarified. A motor incomplete injury requires either voluntary anal sphincter contraction or the presence of sensory preservation in the sacral segment with residual motor function in more than three segments below the motor plane. Currently, the ASIA 2000 standard for neurological examination of spinal cord injury is a neurological classification of spinal cord injury developed by the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) and is the most widely used.
