Is chondrosarcoma serious?

Chondrosarcoma is a benign tumor. If it remains stable for a long time and does not cause any discomfort, the condition is not serious; if there is nerve compression, fracture, or deterioration, the condition is more serious. We can analyze whether chondrosarcoma is serious according to different types: 1. Endogenous chondrosarcoma: It is a chondrosarcoma that occurs in the center of the backbone and is a more common type of chondrosarcoma; it is usually seen in adolescents and often has no obvious symptoms in the early stage and is not serious. As patients grow older, some of them will gradually develop pain, swelling, and deformity of bones, etc. Serious patients will be more prone to fracture due to osteolytic destruction in the bone marrow cavity, and the disease is relatively serious at this time; 2. Exophytic chondrosarcoma: also called periosteal chondrosarcoma, which is relatively rare among chondrosarcomas. The disease can show pain and swelling of joints and other severe joint limitations, which can affect the normal behavioral activities of patients and is therefore more serious; 3. Other chondromas: Ollier’s disease, which belongs to chondrodysplasia, is a multiple chondromas with subperiosteal deposits; when it is accompanied by angiomas of cartilage tissue, skin, etc., it is called Maffucci’s syndrome. It is common in children within 10 years of age, and as they grow older, it can appear as a painless mass, and the lesion continuously invades normal bone tissue, leading to abnormalities in the epiphyseal plate and shortening and deformity of the limb; it affects the patient’s shape and psychological health, and has a serious impact on the patient’s life; it has a certain possibility of malignant transformation when it grows into adulthood, and is a relatively serious disease overall. The treatment of chondrosarcoma is generally based on surgery, which usually involves thorough scraping or removal of the diseased segment and bone grafting; usually after scientific and professional treatment, the prognosis is better.
