Compared to many other types of solid tumors, breast cancer is a group of tumors with better treatment outcomes and longer survival periods. The number of treatment options and the greater number of drugs available is an important factor in the good outcome. Treatment for breast cancer mainly includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and targeted therapy. For early stage breast cancer patients, surgery is the most important treatment to achieve the goal of cure. The decision of radiotherapy after surgery is based on whether the lymph nodes in the axilla have metastasized and the size of the tumor. In addition, some advanced breast cancers with bone metastases and bone pain can be treated with local radiotherapy. Chemotherapy is very important for breast cancer, whether before surgery, after surgery, or in case of recurrent metastases, most patients should receive chemotherapy, which can significantly prolong the survival period. Chemotherapy for breast cancer is relatively effective, and there are relatively more types of chemotherapy drugs available, including paclitaxel, doxorubicin, adriamycin, epiamycin, pyrimethamine, cisplatin, carboplatin, platinum oxalate, siroda, fluorouracil, gemcitabine, cyclophosphamide, etc. Endocrine therapy is another effective and low side effect treatment for breast cancer. The growth of some breast cancer cells depends on estrogen secreted in the body. Endocrine therapy is to lower the level of estrogen in the body or block the effect of estrogen on cancer cells with drugs. For premenopausal patients, either triamcinolone acetonide or aromatase inhibitors or a combination of both can be used. For postmenopausal patients, both triamcinolone acetonide and aromatase inhibitors can be used, but studies have shown that aromatase inhibitors are more effective. Unlike chemotherapy, endocrine therapy does not have toxic side effects such as hair loss, nausea and vomiting, and blood cell drop caused by chemotherapy, and it is mostly oral drugs, which are easy to use. Therefore, endocrine therapy can be considered for some patients who cannot receive chemotherapy. Targeted therapy is a new method of tumor treatment. There are some proteins on the surface of tumor cells that promote cell growth. Targeted therapy drugs use these proteins as targets and play the role of killing tumor cells by inhibiting their activities. The mechanism of targeted therapy is different from chemotherapy, and generally does not have those toxic side effects of chemotherapy. Therefore, Herceptin can only be used in HER2-expressing breast cancer.
