The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of PLA General Hospital was established in 1979 by Professor Su Hongxi, the founder of cardiac surgery in China. After decades of efforts, especially in the past ten years under the leadership of Professor Gao Changqing, the leader of the discipline, the Department has made great progress in health care, medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, and the level of health care, personnel team building and international academic status are among the leading and international advanced ranks in China. There are more than one hundred staff members in the department, the total area of the department is about 6000 square meters, and 90 beds are prepared. The department has international first-class ward facilities and ICU monitoring equipment, first-class specialized operating room for cardiac surgery, and the world’s most advanced da Vinci robotic surgery system, 3D color ultrasound diagnostic instrument, electronic endoscopic bridge vascular free system, total heart assist system, ECMO system, aortic balloon counterpulsation and other equipment. Professor Gao Changqing, the leader of the department, is an internationally renowned expert in cardiovascular surgery, and is currently the Vice President of the PLA General Hospital. He is a member of the Standing Committee of the American Society for Robotic Surgery and other academic positions. As the most important cardiovascular surgery health care base in China, the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the PLA General Hospital is responsible for the treatment of difficult and critical diseases and difficult cases of cardiovascular diseases in the army officers and soldiers; at the same time, it treats a large number of local cardiovascular disease patients every year, with an annual admission of 2,000 patients and an annual surgery volume of more than 1,000 cases, ranking first in Beijing General Hospital. Now it consists of two general wards, one intensive care unit (ICU), anesthesia research laboratory, extracorporeal circulation research laboratory, echocardiography research laboratory, specialized laboratory, extracorporeal circulation journal and cardiovascular surgery journal. It is clinically divided into several subspecialty groups such as robotic minimally invasive surgery group, coronary surgery treatment, valve surgery treatment, precordial surgery treatment, large vessel surgery treatment, heart failure surgery treatment, and arrhythmia surgery treatment. The technical features of the department include robotic minimally invasive cardiac surgery, ventricular wall tumor surgery, minimally invasive coronary artery disease surgery, infant congenital heart disease surgery, and severe heart valve disease surgery, all of which are at the advanced level in China and are well known in the industry, and have won many medical achievements and awards. Especially in the field of robotic minimally invasive cardiac surgery, we are the first unit in China to carry out fully robotic open-heart cardiac surgery, pioneering robotic minimally invasive cardiac surgery in China and ranking first in the world in terms of the types of surgeries performed, establishing the technical routine and training management standard of robotic cardiac surgery in China and reaching a world-leading level. The “minimally invasive surgical technology for treatment of cardiac macrovascular diseases” with robotics as the core won the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress in 2012. As the first unit to carry out robotic surgery in mainland China, PLA General Hospital established “International Robotic Cardiac Surgery Training Base”, “Army Robotic Surgery Training Base” and “Ministry of Health Robotic Cardiac Surgery Training Base” in 2012. The Cardiovascular Surgery Department has completed short-term training for nearly 20 international and domestic teams in robotic cardiac surgery, with a training time of 2-7 days, which has received wide praise from domestic and foreign robotic training teams. The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery is also the first batch of authorized disciplines for doctoral and master’s degrees and postdoctoral stations, and is a training base for specialist physicians in Beijing, where it undertakes routine teaching and training work in addition to a large amount of medical care. The department has 18 staff with various senior titles, 6 supervisors of doctoral/master’s degree students and 10 supervisors of advanced students, and 3-5 doctoral and master’s degree students and 5-10 advanced students are enrolled every year. Over the past decades, cardiovascular surgery has trained dozens of postdoctoral, doctoral and master’s degree students and hundreds of advanced students, making outstanding contributions to the development and popularization of cardiovascular surgery in China. Recently, in order to further promote and popularize the special techniques of cardiovascular surgery in our hospital, expand the influence of the discipline, and attract more doctors to come to our hospital for training and study in cardiovascular surgery, the cardiovascular surgery department has recently launched a number of short-term training programs including cardiovascular surgery, cardiovascular surgery anesthesia, extracorporeal circulation techniques, cardiac ultrasound, postoperative cardiovascular surgery, cardiovascular surgery specialist nursing, etc. on top of the regular one-year fellowship training. The training time is 30-90 days. For remote and poor areas, the department will also contact charitable organizations to subsidize the training of doctors to come to our hospital for free cardiovascular surgery training.
