Treatment of pituitary microadenoma

My daughter is 21 years old and has had amenorrhea and overflow of milk for the past six months. She has been examined by several hospitals and diagnosed with pituitary microadenoma.

Comment】 Amenorrhea and overflow of milk are the main clinical manifestations of pituitary adenoma, which is called prolactin adenoma. Pituitary adenomas less than 1 cm in diameter are generally referred to as microadenomas. Pituitary adenoma is a benign tumor and is not usually malignant. Prolactin adenomas can be controlled clinically with bromocriptine, and prolactin adenomas larger than 0.5 cm in diameter often require surgical removal.

If the diameter of pituitary adenoma is less than 0.5 cm as seen by MRI, you can take bromocriptine drug, half a tablet (1.25 mg) daily, and after three months, the dose will be adjusted according to the blood test prolactin level and clinical manifestation. If the pituitary adenoma is larger than 0.5 cm in diameter, surgery is preferable. With the development of medical technology, the surgery is now very mature and safe, and the pain is also small. The surgery is carried out through the nasal cavity, and the postoperative appearance is not affected in any way.

Bromocriptine is a drug that inhibits the synthesis of prolactin by tumor cells, thus it can only control the clinical manifestations of patients with prolactin adenoma, but not the growth of the tumor, and surgery is the only means for the radical treatment of pituitary adenoma.
