Normally, rib fractures are immobilized with a rib band for about one month. During this one-month period, the rib band should not be removed at will, nor should the rib band be removed while sleeping. Because the rib band is needed to provide initial stability at the beginning of the fracture, if it is removed at will, it can easily cause micromovement of the broken end of the fracture and cause the fracture to shift. A CT of the ribs can be taken at one month after the fracture and the rib band can be removed if it is clear that there is continuous bone scab passing through the fracture break. Begin training for thoracic expansion. It usually takes three months for a rib fracture to heal completely.
