Can I stop my hypertension medication?

This is a question that many patients with hypertension often ask. First of all, this is a sense of uneasiness about long-term oral medication, worrying that long-term medication may cause liver and kidney damage, so they say they look forward to the day when they can stop taking antihypertensive medication. Other people are taking antihypertensive drugs for a long time, which adds to their daily expenses, and they do not want to take them for a long time due to economic factors, so they hope they can stop taking them. It is difficult to answer this question in one sentence because it is possible to stop taking medication for hypertension, but most patients, however, are required to take medication for life, so it is not possible to generalize this question. Generally speaking, in patients with secondary hypertension, that is, those who have found the cause of hypertension, it is possible that through treatment, the blood pressure will return to normal and no more oral antihypertensive drugs will be needed. However, 90% of patients have primary hypertension, that is, hypertension due to heredity or unknown causes, so such patients will need to take medication for life. However, the blood pressure should be monitored regularly during the course of medication, and it is best to take regular blood pressure measurements every day before taking the medication, because sometimes the blood pressure may fluctuate with temperature changes or when the person’s resistance decreases. If the blood pressure is relatively low recently, then you can also suspend the drug, but to closely monitor the blood pressure, if the systolic blood pressure gradually exceeded 140 mm Hg, then you can add a small dose of antihypertensive drugs, according to the blood pressure rise, and then combined with the actual medication. There are also some people who may be obese, or nervous caused by exercise to lose weight, relaxation, blood pressure can be restored to normal, then such patients can also stop the drug observation. It is recommended that patients should consult with a cardiovascular physician when discontinuing antihypertensive drugs, specifying the situation, so that the doctor can decide whether to discontinue the drug for observation at this stage, or not to use the drug at all, or to reduce the dosage, do not stop the drug at will, stopping the drug at will may cause cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction some malignant consequences.
