Type H hypertension is a specific type of hypertension with increased homocysteine (Hcy) that was proposed by China itself and is associated with folic acid. China is a low-folate country, so China has more H-type hypertension, and he has a high risk of stroke. Studies have shown that lowering Hcy levels may reduce stroke events, and folic acid supplementation is currently the only effective treatment to lower Hcy levels. However, the evidence from large randomized controlled studies of folic acid supplementation to reduce stroke is not sufficient, and a meta-analysis published by our research team in Lancet in 2007 concluded that folic acid supplementation reduced stroke events by 18%, with positive overall efficacy, but not definitive efficacy in reducing cardiovascular events. In addition, the benefit of stroke risk reduction is greater in populations where food has not been supplemented with folic acid in the past, such as the Chinese population, and a large number of population-based and randomized controlled studies have been done in the last 10 years or so, all of which have observed a benefit of stroke reduction with folic acid supplementation. Therefore management of H hypertension requires both hands, one to lower blood pressure and the other to lower Hcy. Our hospital will participate in the national key research led by Professor Huo Yong, a famous cardiovascular expert and chairman of the National Cardiovascular Disease Group, to classify and manage hypertensive patients, which we believe will achieve very significant results.
