Cough is a common symptom of respiratory illness in children and is an effective way to eliminate phlegm and foreign bodies from the respiratory tract, but for frequent, uncontrollable coughing episodes, it should be given due attention. If a child has a “cold” with a cough as the main manifestation, or if other symptoms of a cold such as nasal congestion, runny nose, or fever have improved, but sometimes the cough is not relieved at all after treatment with various antibiotics and cough suppressants, but is persistent, this child often has cough variant asthma. Cough variant asthma, also known as cough asthma, used to be called allergic asthma, allergic bronchitis, allergic cough, cryptogenic asthma, and cough asthma. It was first reported and named as variant asthma by Gluser in 1972. Cough variant asthma is a specific type of asthma in which chronic cough is the main or only clinical manifestation. In the early stages of asthma onset, about 5-6% have a persistent cough as the main symptom, mostly occurring at night or in the early hours of the morning, often as an irritating cough, when it is often misdiagnosed as bronchitis. Cough variant asthma is characterized by: 1. persistent cough or recurrent attacks for more than one month, often occurring at night or in the early morning, aggravated by exercise, with little sputum; 2. laboratory or other tests showing no obvious signs of infection or ineffective long-term antibiotic treatment; 3. use of bronchodilators to reduce attacks; 4. personal history of allergies, i.e., with eczema urticaria, allergic rhinitis, etc. A family history of allergy can also be found; 5. Asthma attacks are triggered by exercise, cold air, allergens or viral infections; 6. Asthma is seasonal, mostly seen in spring and autumn and recurrent; 7. Chest X-ray shows normal or increased lung texture but no other organic changes. Parents should pay attention to the prevention work, life should be noted: 1, in the change of seasons, sudden changes in temperature, should be timely for the child to add clothes, while clothing should be frequently disinfected drying; 2, avoid eating food that will cause allergy symptoms, such as crabs, shrimp, etc.; 3, do not keep pets and flowers at home, do not lay carpets; avoid contact with pollen, dust mites, oil fumes, paint, etc.; 4, do not let children hold long fluffy toys Sleep; 5, indoor, especially in the children’s bedroom to keep ventilation.
