Do I have to lose my breasts if I get breast cancer?

Do you have to lose your breast if you have breast cancer? Traditional breast cancer surgery requires the removal of not only the breast and lymph nodes, but also most of the pectoral muscles underneath the breast, which is extensive and traumatic, causing great physical and psychological damage to the patient. With the improvement of comprehensive breast cancer treatment, it is now possible to treat early stage breast cancer without removing the breast, which is called “breast-conserving surgery”. However, breast-conserving surgery is not yet available for all breast cancer patients. Only patients with appropriate size, location and stage of the disease, who are eligible for post-surgical radiotherapy and who require breast-conserving surgery, are suitable for breast-conserving surgery. Some breast cancer patients who are not suitable for breast-conserving surgery still need to have their breasts removed, but the surgeon can use plastic surgery techniques to reconstruct the breast. Breast reconstruction can be done using autologous tissue reconstruction or prosthesis reconstruction. Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time as the surgery to remove the tumor or at the end of the treatment when all the review results are normal. Breast reconstruction will not interfere with the treatment of breast cancer.
