(1) The child is in a sitting position with the head slightly tilted toward the water basin or sink. Do not allow the child to lie flat or tilt his or her head to avoid swallowing bleeding into the nose and secondary vomiting of blood.
(2) Gently pinch the soft part under the nose (nasal wing) with your fingers for 10 minutes and let the child breathe through his mouth. Do not let go, check for bleeding, and use a timer or clock to ensure that the compressions last 10 minutes.
(3) Have the child spit out any blood that flows into the mouth.
For more serious cases, such as facial trauma, difficulty in stopping bleeding, repeated heavy bleeding or with other parts of the body that bleed easily and bruise easily, promptly visit an ENT.
