What is reflux esophagitis

Reflux esophagitis is an inflammatory disease caused by the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, which stimulates the esophageal mucosa; in normal people, the lower esophageal sphincter is tightly closed to prevent the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus when no swallowing activity is carried out, but under the action of some triggers, the sphincter cannot close normally, resulting in the reflux of acidic gastric juice or alkaline intestinal fluid into the esophagus, which stimulates and corrodes the esophageal mucosa, causing reflux esophagitis. This causes reflux esophagitis. The main symptoms of reflux esophagitis are heartburn, acid reflux and difficulty in swallowing. Heartburn mostly occurs when bending and stooping, coughing, straining to defecate, lying on the back or side with the head in a low position. Acid reflux occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach reflux into the pharynx or mouth. When inflammation causes esophageal spasm or esophageal scar narrowing, dysphagia or even painful swallowing can occur, and chronic esophageal bleeding can occur in severe cases. When nervousness or eating acidic juice, high fat diet, spicy and irritating diet as well as smoking, drinking alcohol, taking caffeine, chocolate, using aspirin and other drugs can trigger or aggravate the above symptoms. Symptoms can be reduced when upright and after taking acid control medications. To confirm the diagnosis of reflux esophagitis, in addition to the typical symptoms, gastroscopy and other tests are required. Gastroscopy shows congestion, edema and erosion of the esophageal mucosa. General treatment should avoid mental stimulation, small and frequent meals, low-fat and light diet, avoid stimulating food; should not eat too much, especially dinner; do not eat before bedtime; avoid smoking, alcohol and coffee, do not lie flat immediately after meals, and elevate the head of the bed during sleep to reduce the chance of acid reflux. Medication is commonly used to suppress stomach acid such as ranitidine, famotidine or omeprazole, and add morpholine and mosapride to promote the emptying of the esophagus and stomach and reduce reflux. In Chinese medicine, reflux esophagitis is caused by the inability of the liver qi to drain properly due to emotional disorders, depression and anger, or by eating spicy and acidic foods, excessive inhalation and swallowing of alcohol, resulting in imbalance of the elevation of the spleen and stomach and the upward rebellion of the stomach qi, causing symptoms such as regurgitation, acid reflux and unfavorable swallowing after eating.
