Don’t use throat lozenges for dry cough

Throat lozenges are divided into western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine according to different ingredients. Western medicine lozenges, such as Huasu tablets and compound ketamine, have bactericidal and anti-infective effects and can kill pathogenic microorganisms in the oropharynx, which are suitable for the treatment of pharyngitis, oral mucosal ulcers, gingivitis and periodontitis. The Chinese medicine category is divided into two categories: treatment and health care. For treatment, there are watermelon cream throat lozenges, golden throat tablets, compound herbal coral tablets, etc. For health care, there are Kyoto Niancian Lozenges and Bright Voice Fatty Sea Throat Lozenges, which have the function of clearing throat and moistening throat. Western medicine throat lozenges are not suitable for long-term use because of the stimulation of the oral mucosa while treatment. Chinese medicine throat lozenges mainly stimulate the mucous membrane to achieve the effect of “quenching thirst”, not suitable for viruses and other infections caused by dry cough, long-term containing will reduce the resistance of the mucous membrane, and even lead to oral ulcers. Lozenges are only auxiliary medicines for laryngitis, mainly used to improve local symptoms. However, some diseases show symptoms of pharyngitis in early stages, such as infectious diseases like tuberculosis, measles and influenza, and non-infectious diseases like postnasal drip syndrome and cough variant asthma. Without a clear diagnosis, relying solely on the use of throat lozenges for treatment is bound to delay the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Cough is a common symptom of respiratory diseases and is a defensive reflex activity that occurs when the respiratory tract is stimulated and facilitates the removal of respiratory secretions and harmful factors. A dry cough is a cough with no or very little sputum and is mostly caused by viral or atypical pathogenic infections, allergic or physicochemical stimuli. There are many common diseases that cause dry cough, such as chronic pharyngitis, post-cold cough, cough variant asthma, allergic cough, gastroesophageal reflux, postnasal drip syndrome, bronchial tuberculosis, etc. Different diseases are treated in completely different ways, and only when the cause of the disease is clarified can the corresponding medication be taken, so that good treatment results can be achieved. Therefore, dry cough caused by chronic pharyngitis can be treated by using throat lozenges appropriately, but should not be taken for a long time (usually not more than 2 months), while paying attention to the combination of work and rest, strengthening physical fitness, avoiding stimulating foods such as tobacco and alcohol, eating lightly, and not speaking or shouting for a long time. After the treatment effect is not good, you should go to the hospital in time. As for dry cough not caused by chronic pharyngitis, because of its many causes and different treatment methods, it is recommended to go to the hospital for further consultation and treatment as soon as possible.
