Surgical treatment of hyperthyroidism (III)

  Special tests commonly used for hyperthyroidism: 1. basal metabolic rate measurement, normal value is plus or minus 10%. 2. measurement of thyroid uptake of 131 iodine. 3. measurement of serum T3 and T4 content.  Surgical treatment: thyroidectomy is the most effective treatment for moderate hyperthyroidism, which can cure 90-95% of patients and has an operative mortality rate of less than 1%. There are certain complications of surgery or hypothyroidism occurs, and 4%-5% of patients have recurrence.  Major complications of surgery: 1. postoperative dyspnea and asphyxia. 2. injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. 3. injury to the superior laryngeal nerve. 4. hand and foot convulsions. 5. thyroid crisis.
