What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is more common in Western countries and used to be a relatively rare disease in China, but it has become more common in recent years. The exact reasons for this are unclear, but some believe it is related to the westernization of the diet, the fast pace of life, stress, and the decrease in breastfeeding, among other reasons. Recently, we have been encountering more and more patients with ulcerative colitis in the outpatient clinic, and there are some common questions about the treatment. Since we are under time constraint in the clinic, we can’t talk about them in detail, so we will share them with you here. If you have ulcerative colitis, you must know something about the disease, and there is a lot of knowledge about it online, as well as some patient websites where you can get this knowledge. The most important point is that ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that may last a lifetime, and recurring episodes are characteristic of this disease. Therefore, in the process of treatment, do not have the attitude of looking for any doctor to prescribe some special medicine and cure it in one go. The entire world, the treatment of ulcerative colitis is relatively difficult, now the most basic means of treatment is the Mesalazine or Liuzesulfonyl Arsenic such drugs, oral or suppositories, enemas. The duration of medication should be long. The domestic 2012 guidelines suggest that the disease needs to be in remission for 3-4 years after the drug. Some patients will be concerned about the adverse effects of drugs, too much trouble to take medication, they began to reduce the drug when the disease is just controlled, stop the drug. This is a very inappropriate approach. It often leads to relapse of the disease. From our clinical experience, the efficacy of medication decreases after a relapse, and it is often much more difficult and time-consuming to control the disease again than the first time. Therefore, patients are strongly advised to adhere to their medication and not to be afraid of trouble. If you are really afraid of adverse drug reactions, you should go to the hospital for regular checkups. Generally speaking, adverse reactions to this type of drug are still relatively rare. Another word about diet, which is also a concern for many patients. When the disease is not under control and the number of stools is high, you should still control your diet and choose a diet with less residue and less fiber to reduce the formation of stools and let the intestines rest. You can even choose some commercialized intestinal elements diet without fiber, which is very helpful to control the disease. During the remission period, when the disease is under control and the stools are basically normal, it is not necessary to control the diet so strictly, but care should be taken to avoid spicy and stimulating, too oily and allergy-prone foods, and try not to try anything new that you have never eaten before. There are also foods that are not easy to ensure hygiene, such as cold dishes, seafood should also be avoided as much as possible, intestinal infections are a very important trigger for the recurrence of ulcerative colitis. This is especially important for patients who travel frequently, dine out, and eat irregularly.
