Cancer is not an incurable disease!

Cancer is not an incurable disease Since the word “cancer” has entered people’s daily life, most patients are afraid of talking about cancer, and “cancer” has become a synonym of incurable disease. The improvement of people’s diet and living standard and the deterioration of living environment have led to cancer becoming a serious problem that affects people’s survival and quality of life. Among them, the incidence rate of colorectal cancer has already caught up with that of developed countries, and even has the tendency to exceed it. However, cancer is by no means an incurable disease. With the development of modern medicine, more and more cancers can become curable through multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment, and the key to cure cancer lies in early detection. Many tumors detected in early stage can be cured through surgical resection or integrated radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which can lead to long-term survival. The reason why tumors are scary is often because we do not detect them early and let them develop, which delays the best time for treatment. Therefore, we should advocate regular medical checkups, early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment. For example, if colorectal cancer is found to be stage I, it can be cured through surgery. 5-year survival rate is over 90%, which is basically the same as healthy people. Colon cancer can also be detected early and can be prevented! Clinically, even for tumors that are already advanced when discovered, the goal of prolonging survival and improving quality of life can be achieved through comprehensive and active treatment. Tumor is a chronic disease, and the development of tumor is not a day or two thing. Once cancer is diagnosed, some patients may request to start treatment immediately, thinking that the tumor will progress rapidly if delayed for one day. For example, for patients with colorectal cancer combined with unresectable liver metastasis, clinical need to consider neoadjuvant therapy and other comprehensive treatments. Surgery is not the only treatment for tumor! For patients with advanced cancer, our treatment goal is to achieve stable control with the disease, just like hypertension or diabetes.
