Is it possible to take herbal medicine during chemotherapy?

In today’s clinic, a patient came to consult whether it is possible to take oral Chinese medicine to regulate breast cancer after surgery and prepare for chemotherapy. When is the right time to start taking them? I would like to give you a general explanation here. 1. Generally speaking, chemotherapy will affect the digestive function of patients, and the common ones are low appetite, anorexia, nausea, constipation, or even vomiting and diarrhea. According to Chinese medicine, when tumor patients receive chemotherapy, they damage qi and blood, deplete qi and injure fluid, resulting in disharmony of yin and yang, and disorders of spleen and stomach. Therefore, the main principle of treatment should be to produce fluid and moisten dryness, strengthen the spleen and stomach. It is recommended that patients should take oral Chinese herbal tonics to strengthen the spleen, harmonize the stomach, regulate qi and nourish yin before chemotherapy to alleviate the gastrointestinal reactions that occur in patients during chemotherapy. However, once gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea and vomiting occur during chemotherapy, herbal medicines should be suspended to avoid aggravating nausea and vomiting symptoms. 2. Some chemotherapy drugs can cause bone marrow suppression, which is manifested as reduced white blood cells and reduced platelets. Most of the leuke-raising drugs in western medicine are transient leukocytes, which are relatively short-lived and will drop again after a period of time. Chinese medicine can still play a good role in this regard. The formula should benefit the Qi and nourish the blood, tonify the kidney and fill the essence, in order to stimulate the patient’s hematopoietic system and achieve the effect of replenishing the blood and raising the white blood cells. Patients are advised to take oral Chinese medicine treatment before and after chemotherapy, and develop individualized herbal soup formulas to support the righteousness and consolidate the root, so as to supplement the righteousness while fighting against the tumor and better complement the chemotherapy.
