Can you exercise strenuously after a broken leg?

After a leg fracture, no strenuous exercise is allowed. After a lower limb fracture, whether it is treated conservatively or surgically, the limb is more or less accompanied by different degrees of swelling and pain. At this time, bed rest should be the main focus, elevate the affected limb, start early functional exercises of the ankle, knee and hip joints, pay attention to active muscle contraction to avoid muscle atrophy and deep vein thrombosis. If the patient exercises strenuously too early, it may aggravate the fracture site, leading to increased swelling and prolonging the treatment time. For conservatively treated patients, more strenuous exercise may also cause displacement of a fracture that is not displaced, thus making a non-operable fracture require surgery, so early strenuous exercise after a lower extremity fracture is not recommended. It is recommended to rest in bed or in a sitting position, elevate the affected limb, and perform a small range of activities and exercises with crutches as prescribed by the doctor.
