Do all hepatocellular carcinomas need herbal treatment after interventional treatment?

Often, patients’ families ask, “Do you need to take Chinese medicine after liver cancer intervention? Probably most western doctors do not advocate the use of traditional Chinese medicine because they think it lacks scientific validity, i.e. there is no evidence of evidence-based medicine, while Chinese doctors tend to use traditional Chinese medicine, and most of the patients and their families hope to “combine Chinese and Western medicine”. In fact, this is also a problem that needs to be viewed in a discriminatory manner. Generally speaking, most liver cancer patients have the foundation of hepatitis and cirrhosis, and their liver function is poor. After the intervention, their liver function will be further reduced, so it is helpful to use some traditional Chinese medicines to protect the liver and improve immunity, i.e., to “support the righteousness”. The application of anti-tumor Chinese medicine may not have much benefit, because after the intervention, the drugs and embolic agents will play a longer role in the tumor (we have observed the tumor specimens resected 2 months after the intervention, and there is still hemorrhage and necrosis and inflammation in them), and the anti-tumor effect of Chinese medicine is not stronger than western medicine, but because of its toxic side effects, it may cause further damage to the liver function. (Some people think that traditional Chinese medicine is non-toxic and harmless, which is a great misconception! (We recently had a patient in our ward who had two interventions and had complete necrosis of liver cancer for more than 3 years, and recently went to take traditional Chinese medicine which caused drug-related hepatitis.) You must go to a regular hospital to take Chinese medicine, and never trust the so-called “secret recipes”! Because the so-called secret prescription is often an overdose of drugs, claiming that it will be better and effective if you survive, and there may be a hormone added to the medicine (before it may be prednisone), after taking it, you feel good spirit, appetite, people become fat, the skin becomes delicate (“Cushing’s”), but the tumor has grown, and the spirit is not good after stopping the medicine. We have encountered 3 such patients, so be assertive and don’t be fooled!
