Every 2.4 seconds, a Chinese woman lies on an abortion table, and the results of a survey conducted in 2013 in 30 provinces, cities and autonomous regions of China, as part of a research project in cooperation with the European Union, showed that among the nearly 80,000 women who had abortions, 28.5 per cent were <24 years of age. The reasons for unwanted pregnancies among adolescents, in addition to failure to use contraception by chance, are very common, as is the failure to use highly effective contraceptive methods. In contrast, there is a wide range of contraceptive methods available, but many young people who are having sex for the first time may not be aware of them, or may even be adopting unreliable methods of contraception.
