Cold expelled outwards can be seen in the shoulders, back, head and throat where pain and discomfort can occur.
The bladder meridian on the back of the body is susceptible to cold, and the back is a large area, so there can be a large amount of cold accumulating within the bladder meridian. Cold qi is first expelled from within the bladder meridian, then cold qi from the stomach meridian, large intestine meridian and lungs is expelled outwards.
Shoulders, back aches and pains occur as the cold is expelled from the Bladder meridian. Since the bladder meridian runs through the entire head, there is also swelling and pain in the back of the head, migraine headaches, and a vague pain in the Yin Tang area.
Massaging the Fengchi points behind the ears can also be painful, and there may be discomfort or coughing in the throat.
Patients can eliminate cold by scraping, sunbathing and taking Chinese medicine, but care needs to be taken to do so under the guidance of a professional doctor.
