Hepatic encephalopathy is treated with medication, surgery, and general treatment. Treatment can slow the progression of the disease and improve the symptoms, but it cannot break the root of the disease.
1.Drug treatment
(1) Non-absorbable disaccharides: such as lactulose and lactitol, which are used to acidify the intestinal tract, promote defecation, and reduce the absorption of ammonia.
(2) Intestinal non-absorbable antibiotics: for example, rifaximin-alpha crystalline, used to inhibit the growth of intestinal bacteria and reduce the production of ammonia.
(3) Microecological modifiers: e.g., probiotics and prebiotics for adjunctive treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
(4) Drugs to increase the metabolic clearance of ammonia: Mentholatum-ornithine, which is used to promote the conversion of ammonia and reduce the patient’s blood ammonia level.
2. Surgical treatment: liver transplantation, used to save patients with end-stage liver disease, is suitable for patients with recurrent episodes of concomitant hepatic failure who are not well treated by conservative treatment.
3. General treatment: Avoid eating high protein food, suggest eating small and frequent meals, and consume high-carbohydrate and easy-to-digest food.
If hepatic encephalopathy is diagnosed, early treatment is recommended to avoid aggravation of the condition.
