Dendrobium has the effect of benefiting the stomach and generating fluids, nourishing Yin and clearing heat. It is used for treating heat disease and fluid injury, inflammation of deficiency fire, dry mouth and thirst, stomach pain in yin deficiency, vomiting, hiccups, spontaneous sweating (involuntary sweating during the daytime, aggravated by sweating with a little movement), deficiency heat after illness, and darkness of the eyes due to yin injury. Note that Dendrobium should be taken with caution for those with warm-heat disease and cold spleen and stomach who have not yet injured their yin.
Radix Codonopsis pilosulae has the effect of tonifying the spleen, benefiting the lungs, nourishing blood and generating fluids. It can be used in treating loose stools, weakness of limbs, swelling of face and eyes, palpitation, shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing, thirst, spontaneous sweating, prolapse of anus and uterine prolapse, and so on. Note that it should not be used in combination with veratrum.
