Causes of fracture after liver transplantation

The cause of fracture after liver transplantation is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a serious complication after liver transplantation, and the incidence of osteoporotic fracture is 24% to 65% in patients who received liver transplantation with severe bone loss and significant decrease in bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck in the first to six months after surgery. Postoperative osteoporosis after liver transplantation is mainly related to preoperative bone loss and rapid postoperative bone loss. Preoperative vitamin D deficiency, calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorders, estrogen deficiency and other factors lead to reduced bone formation and low-conversion osteoporosis; postoperative corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs, long-term bed rest and lack of sunlight lead to high-conversion osteoporosis. Fractures after liver transplantation should immediately go to a regular hospital for diagnosis and treatment by a specialized physician.
