How does enhanced CT damage the kidneys

Enhanced CT generally does not cause damage to the kidneys, but a small number of patients may develop elevated blood creatinine, clinically known as contrast nephropathy. Contrast nephropathy is defined as renal impairment that occurs 72 hours after intravascular administration of contrast media when other causes are excluded. The iohexol and iophorol used in enhanced CT are excreted through the kidneys, and the contrast agent will cause abnormal renal blood flow distribution and toxicity to renal tubular epithelial cells, etc. Prevention and treatment of this disease is still based on prevention, paying attention to the risk assessment, and choosing the appropriate type and dose of contrast agent. Enhanced CT examination also has certain contraindications, patients are recommended to consult with a specialized physician before undergoing enhanced CT examination.
