The efficacy of Tian Xian Teng is mainly to move qi and activate blood circulation (to promote the operation of qi so as to circulate blood), diuretic and eliminate edema (to facilitate urination and eliminate edema). It is used in treating tingling in the epigastrium (abdomen), paralyzing pain in the joints, and edema in pregnancy. Tian Xian Teng belongs to the Aristolochiaceae family and is the dried above-ground part of Aristolochia or Northern Aristolochia. In traditional Chinese medicine, Tian Xian Teng is warm in nature, bitter in flavor, and enters the liver, spleen and kidney meridians. It should be noted that the use of Tian Xian Teng should be under the guidance of a doctor, and should not be taken on its own. Kidney insufficiency, pregnant women, infants and young children are prohibited to take Tian Xian Teng, and those who are physically weak should be cautious.
