How common is sudden cardiac death?

Approximately 17 million people die globally each year, and about 40-50% of these cardiovascular deaths are sudden cardiac deaths. Approximately 80% of sudden cardiac deaths are caused by ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs), which account for approximately 6 million deaths annually, and the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest is less than 1% globally and nearly 5% in the United States. Sudden cardiac death is often characterized by cardiac arrest or pulseless electrical activity, and increasing attention is being paid to heart block as a cause of the condition. The incidence of sudden cardiac death has increased in recent years. Early resuscitation and cardiac defibrillation are the keys to saving a person from sudden cardiac death, and immediate medical attention should be sought in the event of sudden syncope, cardiac arrest, loss of pulse, and other symptoms of sudden cardiac death.
