Lovastatin is effective in lowering blood cholesterol, with side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort and contraindications such as allergies. Lovastatin and others can lower blood cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and raise blood HDL cholesterol, and are indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia. Side effects of the drug include gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, rash, dizziness, blurred vision, abnormal taste, liver damage, myositis, myalgia, rhabdomyolysis, pancreatitis, and hyperglycemia. Contraindications to lovastatin are hypersensitivity, patients with active liver disease, and those with unexplained transaminase elevations. Patients with hyperlipidemia must use the drug and review under the guidance of a physician, and if any adverse reaction occurs after the use of the drug needs to be discontinued and handled by a physician.
