What to do if you bleed with elevated platelets

Bleeding from elevated platelets is more common in thrombocythemia and can be treated by giving a blood cell separator to remove platelets and hydroxyurea.
If the platelet count is too high with bleeding or thrombotic complications, a blood cell separator can be given to remove platelets as an emergency treatment, along with chemotherapy drugs such as hydroxyurea, and the platelet count can usually be lowered rapidly.
Long-term use of a blood cell separator to remove platelets is generally not recommended, and drugs such as hydroxyurea should be used to maintain or continue to lower platelet counts in the normal range. Hydroxyurea use can be adjusted in dosage based on the patient’s platelet count, weight, and age.
The diagnosis of thrombocythemia bleeding should be promptly regulated under the supervision of a physician to receive treatment to avoid adverse consequences.
