How to treat a fracture of the 11th rib

The 11th rib is known as a free rib and is treated with external immobilization with a chest strap for milder symptoms and surgery for severe cases or other complications. The ends of the fracture are supported by the upper and lower ribs and intercostal muscles, so misalignment occurs, movement is rare, and the fracture most often heals spontaneously. When the fracture is only simple rib fracture, there will be obvious compression pain, accompanied by local swelling, the pain may be aggravated by deep breathing and coughing, and most of them are treated with external immobilization with chest belt to reduce the activity of the fracture end, and at the same time, pain relief and prevention of lung infection, application of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate the pain. When the displacement of the fracture is obvious or there are complications, such as puncture of the pleura or pneumothorax, accompanied by chest tightness, shortness of breath, dyspnea and other symptoms, timely surgical treatment should be carried out, as well as the prevention of infection. Patients should take more rest in supine position and avoid strenuous exercise to prevent secondary fracture. It is necessary to use medication and take correct treatment measures under the guidance of the doctor.
