Can Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan treat prostate enlargement?

Prostatic hyperplasia belongs to the category of Jing-癃 in Chinese medicine. If the diagnosis of retention of essence is deficiency of kidney yin, the Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan formula can be used for treatment, but the effect of using Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan alone may be limited. It should not be used for other syndromes.
When Jing-癃 is recognized as a deficiency of kidney yin, it manifests as frequent urination, scanty urination, burning in the urethra, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, five heartburns and heat (heat in the palms of the hands and the hearts of the feet, and self-consciousness of the heart and chest being irritated and hot), and constipation of the bowels. Treatment is based on nourishing kidney yin and diuresis, and Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is often used as the main formula with additional medications for treatment.
Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan consists of Zhi Mu, Huang Bai, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Radix et Rhizoma Zedoariae, Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori, Poria. It is effective in nourishing yin and reducing fire, and is often used in treating hot flashes and night sweating caused by yin deficiency and fire exuberance (sweating abnormally after going to sleep, but stopping after waking up), dry mouth and sore throat, tinnitus and spermatorrhea, and urination (small amount of urination with dark yellow color).
Adverse effects of Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan are not clear. It should be used with caution in cases of qi deficiency and fever, colds, spleen deficiency with loose stools, and qi stagnation with fullness in the middle of the body.
The use of Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (知柏地黄丸) as a proprietary Chinese medicine for the treatment of retention of urine may not be sufficient to achieve a good therapeutic effect.
Consult a professional Chinese medicine practitioner for advice on the use of specific medications, and do not apply them on your own to avoid damage to the organism.
