Side effects and dangers of citron

There is no authoritative information to document the side effects and hazards of citron. Citron has a sour, bitter and pungent flavor, warm medicinal properties, and belongs to the liver, spleen and lung meridians. It is good at resolving phlegm, relaxing the middle (evacuating depressed qi in the middle jiao), and dispersing the liver and regulating qi, and is used in treating stagnant qi in the liver and stomach, distension and pain in the chest and ribs, plumping in the epigastric (abdomen) area (bloated and uncomfortable in the stomach), vomiting and yelping (hiccups), and coughing with much phlegm. However, this medicine should be used with caution in cases of yin deficiency and heat. It is often used clinically together with the herbs Chai Hu, Buddha’s Hands and Ul Jin to improve chest and hypochondrium distension and pain caused by liver depression. This medicine is also effective in combining with other medicines such as Muxiang, Sha Ren and Huo Xiang to improve the distension and pain in the epigastrium and abdomen caused by stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach, low intake of food and vomiting, belching (belching), and swallowing acid (swallowing the acid that rushes upwards from the stomach to the oropharynx). The adverse effects and contraindications of the above drugs are not known. Since there is no authoritative information on the side effects and dangers of this drug, it can usually be assumed that the correct use of citron does not cause significant harm to the body. Patients who need to use this medicine must be instructed by a professional Chinese medicine practitioner.
