What are the risks of drilling and draining a subdural hematoma?

There are risks of intraoperative bleeding, intracranial infection and epidural hematoma in subdural hematoma drilling and drainage, but the risks are generally small.
1. Intraoperative hemorrhage: when drilling and draining is performed, the drain tube may damage brain tissue and cause cerebral blood vessel rupture leading to cerebral hemorrhage, but the possibility of this happening is generally small under fine operation.
2. Intracranial infection: Inadequate care of the drainage tube after the operation may lead to the risk of drainage tube reflux, which may cause retrograde intracranial infection, therefore, the smoothness of the drainage tube and the drainage situation should be closely monitored after the subdural drilling and drainage operation.
3. Epidural hematoma: If the middle meningeal artery is damaged during surgery, epidural hematoma may be caused.
After drilling and drainage of epidural hematoma, patients should be absolutely bedridden, and at the same time, head CT should be reviewed in time to observe the drainage of hematoma. If there is any abnormality after the operation, the patient should inform the doctor in time, so as to avoid any danger to the patient’s life and health.
