The effect of Wu Ling San with gunner’s appendage is to warm yang and facilitate water circulation (to replenish yang qi in the body and promote water circulation), and should be used under the doctor’s diagnosis. Wu Ling San is a traditional Chinese medicine formula composed of Poria, Cinnamon, Zedoary, Poria and Atractylodes Macrocephala. It has the efficacy of warming yang and transforming qi (warming the body’s yang qi) and promoting the flow of water and dampness. It is used for edema caused by Yang not transforming Qi (blockage of Qi in the body) and stagnation of water-dampness, manifesting as edema and abdominal distension, vomiting, hiccups, diarrhea, thirst for water, and dysuria (unruly urination). Cannonball Epiphyllum has the effects of tonifying fire and assisting yang (replenishing yang qi in the body), returning yang to save reversal (saving fainting, unconsciousness, etc. by warming yang qi), relieving pain and dispersing cold. It is used for death of yang, deficiency of heart yang, cold vomiting and diarrhea, kidney yang deficiency (deficiency of yang qi in the kidneys), cold pain in the epigastric region (feeling cold pain in the stomach and abdomen), external sensation of yang deficiency, oedema of yin cold and cold-dampness paralysis and pain, and so on. The adverse reactions and contraindications of Wu Ling San are not clear. Adverse reactions are unclear. Cannonball epiphyllum should not be used with smallpox pollen, shellac, hemicarpium, gua shao, bai zhi, bai he. The addition of Cannonball Epiphyllum to Wu Ling San enhances the efficacy of warming yang and inducing diuresis, and can be used in diseases caused by deficiency of yang qi, and internal stagnation of water-drinking (abnormal retention of water and fluid in the body).
