What causes low absolute neutrophil counts?

Low absolute neutrophil counts may be due to physiologic fluctuations. However, a progressive decrease in neutrophil count suggests that the subject may be suffering from infections, aplastic anemia, and other diseases. Radioactive substances, chemical poisons and certain medications may also cause neutropenia.
In general, the normal value of neutrophil count in adults is (1.5~8) x 10^9/L. If it is lower than 1.5 x 10^9/L, it is considered as neutropenia.
1. It should be noted that neutrophil count may fluctuate slightly with time, body temperature, exercise status and physiological fluctuations. Therefore, if the neutrophil count is mildly low in several physical examinations and there is no symptom of susceptibility to infection, it is mostly considered to be physiologically low.
2. If you have recently received chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, anti-tuberculosis treatment (rifamphenicol), anti-thyroid drugs (methylthiouracil), chemotherapy (cytarabine) and other treatments, it may be related to drugs.
3. If neutropenia is accompanied by anemia, low platelets, or fever, shortness of breath, dizziness, malaise, and skin ecchymosis, hematologic disorders such as aplastic anemia are suspected.
Specific disease diagnosis and treatment need to be carried out under the guidance of a physician.
