In the case of stone-related bile duct obstruction surgery can be largely curative, and in the case of bile duct malignancy there is some possibility of cure through surgical treatment.
For most bile duct obstruction, it is mainly stone-related obstruction. As gallbladder stones tend to get stuck in the narrowing of the lumen during their descent, they in turn cause mechanical obstruction of the bile ducts. Most cases require surgical treatment, such as choledochotomy for stone removal, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for stone removal; and removal of the gallbladder, if necessary, to prevent recurrence of stone-associated bile duct obstruction.
For bile duct obstruction associated with bile duct malignancy, due to the malignant nature of the malignant tumor, radical surgery, despite relieving the current obstruction, the postoperative 5-year survival rate is highly dependent on the stage of the cancer, and absolute cure cannot be guaranteed.
In addition, obstruction due to biliary roundworms can be treated with oral mebendazole therapy and surgery. Therefore, different bile duct obstructions need to be treated according to the condition.
